Eligere - How to operate with multiple browsers on macOS

On macos you when you click on a link outside of your web browser it opens in your default web browser. If you use more than one web browser on a regular basis having a single default web browser can be very restrictive and hard to use. I am using at least 3 browsers equally for different purposes: personal, working, web development. And I wanted to have something like: “open all links from Mail.app in Safari” or “all AWS links should be opened in Firefox”. And if I don’t have a rule for some source app or domain - just have a way to select a browser upon opening a link.

There are various applications that can do that: Choosy, OpenIn, Eligere and more.

I am using Eligere app for this. It gives the ability to declare rules based on domain masks, source application and provide other features like:

  • hiding a browser from popup (but use in rules)

  • removing tracking from links applying rules to shortened URLs (e.g. if you have youtube.com link inside bit.ly).

  • pass custom arguments when launching a browser

  • declare the default one for all unknown links

  • And, of course, using keyboard shortcuts to select a browser when needed.

The difference of Eligere from other apps is that it uses TOML configuration file instead of complex UI. Text editing is just much faster. Also, you can synchronise this configuration file in any way you want to use on all your macOS machines.

But if you prefer do all the configuration on UI - you could try Choosy, OpenIn and others. They have many features in common, but some unique features as well.
